Novels about a woman having a child without the father’s knowledge is another common theme in the romance genre. Here, however, the notion is turned on its head: the woman is also initially unaware of her pregnancy, even though it’s news to her estranged husband, as well.

Thanks to a coma induced by a natural disaster, Skye Taylor is confused about the new baby in her life and her husband’s curious distance. She doesn’t remember that she’d filed for divorce before the accident and he’s been forbidden by the doctor to do or say anything that could upset her. All Skye knows is that she’s still in love with Jake—and his excuses about avoiding sex with her aren’t going to hold up for much longer.

The novel shifts us back and forth between their viewpoints as Jake struggles not to take advantage of Skye’s amnesia and Skye attempts to sort through the blank spaces in her memories. This novel, about how a married couple tries to fix what’s gone wrong in their marriage, breathes refreshing air into the genre. Their relationship is alternately helped and hindered by their relatives and various in-laws.

The years have changed the social dynamics in Jake’s hometown and he has to come to grips with it all and let go, even as the past threatens to ruin his marriage and newfound fatherhood. Jake’s wariness towards and confusion about others in his immediate circle are as admirably written as his wife’s puzzlement over their estrangement.

It takes a bit of time to sort through the panoply of characters and how they relate to Jake and Skye. But it’s worth the effort. The novel handles its romance and other subject matters with keen insight and excellent writing. It’s a story with a twist and the occasional spurt of humor, proving that romance can continue even with crying and pooping babies in the mix.
