"Junior-high student Misaki Suzuhara has just arrived in Tokyo to live with her glamorous TV news star aunt and to attend the prestigious Eriol Academy. But what excites her above everything is Angelic Layer, the arena game where you control an Angel-- a miniature robot fighter whose moves depend on your mind! Misaki's small, just like her Angel, Hikaru (named after her favorite manga, Magic Knight Rayearth), but her natural battle skills have been recognized by a very odd scientist, Ichiro 'Icchan' Mihara. Before she knows it, Misaki is an up-and-coming contender in Angelic Layer-- and in way over her not-very-tall head! How far can enthusiasm take her in an arena full of much more experienced fighters-- and a game full of secrets?" -- from publisher's web site.

Usually game-based manga are aimed at boys, Angelic Layer has the distinction of being for girls though. It carries some of the hallmarks of the former, like friendship, growing stronger, and an air of destiny, but keeps it in the cute sphere of the magical girl genre. Misaki is young, small, and has some family problems, but through Angelic Layer she slowly becomes stronger, as she pores her heart into Hikaru. Her desire to keep her doll safe allows her to form a deep attachment that will help her rise to the top where she will face ever stronger opponents, and eventually one very important person in her life. Her naivety fits well with the comedy that is used, which usually fills up the quieter moments. As this is one of Clamp's middle period works, the style is clean, yet not as elegant as their later stories. Angelic Layer may be one of their shorter works, but the plot is given enough time to let events progress at a natural pace.
