Napoli is well-researched; she is true to history and true to the circumstances that would be that of a tenth century slave, making it heartbreaking to read at times. The story is told from Melkorka's perspective. In the face of adversity, she adapts to survive. She is a strong female character. With the recent events in the Middle East, and the growing human trafficking problem even here in the United States, this story is relevant to our society today.

"Fifteen-year-old Melkorka is a 10th-century Irish princess and a self-centered chatterbox who is accustomed to being pampered. While her father, the King, prepares to avenge a Viking attack that disfigured Melkorka's brother, Mel and her younger sister Brigid are sent away for their own safety - but on the way to their refuge, the sisters are captured by Russian slavers. On board their slave ship, Mel's only protection is her refusal to speak, which makes the superstitious captain and crew wary of her. This lavishly (and sometimes brutally) detailed story of strength in adversity is based on an Icelandic legend." This book was... Beautiful. ( It took me back in time to the 900's)
I simply couldn't put it down!
The only thing was that the end frustrated me a bit :(

I really enjoyed this book. It's hard to describe what it's about but basically an Irish princess named Melkorka, becomes kidnapped and put onto a slave ship. She takes a vow of silence and will not talk to her captors or anyone else. This is her power over them, silence. This book was slow in the beginning but got better when she was on the slave ship, and continued throughout the whole book. Recommended.
