Left behind during the Thanksgiving holiday break, Robin Stone and four other students--Patrick, the jock; Lisa, a manipulative tease; Cain, the brooding musician; and Martin, a scholarly eccentric--all of whom have their own reasons for remaining on campus, gradually become aware of a sixth ominous presence that may have its own terrifying agenda for them.

McMillan Palgrave
Baird College's Mendenhall echoes with the footsteps of the last home-bound students heading off for Thanksgiving break, and Robin Stone swears she can feel the creepy, hundred-year-old residence hall breathe a sigh of relief for its long-awaited solitude. Or perhaps it's only gathering itself for the coming weekend.

As a massive storm dumps rain on the isolated campus, four other lonely students reveal themselves: Patrick, a handsome jock; Lisa, a manipulative tease; Cain, a brooding musician; and finally Martin, a scholarly eccentric. Each has forsaken a long weekend at home for their own secret reasons.

The five unlikely companions establish a tentative rapport, but they soon become aware of a sixth presence disturbing the ominous silence that pervades the building. Are they the victims of a simple college prank taken way too far, or is the unusual energy evidence of something genuine---and intent on using the five students for its own terrifying ends? It's only Thursday afternoon, and they have three long days and dark nights before the rest of the world returns to find out what's become of them. But for now it's just the darkness keeping company with five students nobody wants and no one will miss.

"The Harrowing" is a thrilling read. I’m a horror movie fan, and if this novel was a scary movie, I would give it a fairly decent rating. It’s probably not the most original story in the world--a group of isolated college kids break out the Ouija board and connect with the spirit of a former student….or is it? There were many times while reading this book that I found myself thinking “this is basically The Breakfast Club hangs out with a demon” ;-) My only real complaint with the book was how smoothly the ending came together--you really can find the answer to all your demonic problems thanks to Google!

Despite the somewhat predictable twists and turns this book took, I read it in about two days. And when I was reading it at night, in the dark, it did give me genuine chills. Considering that most of the horror novels I’ve read have been a let down, I’m pretty happy with this one. I will be checking out more by this author.

Two words: Brilliantly amazing!

I have read almost all of her books. She writes wonderfully and keeps you truly involved in the story. I originally would not have read a book in the "horror" category. But she does a wonderful job and leaves out all the unnecessary gore that you get in this type of genre. Very addictive!

While staying at school during Thanksgiving vacation, Robin and a group of four misfits find an Ouija board hidden in the campus lounge bookshelf. As they press their fingers on the planchette, they find themselves confronting a ghost from the past bent on using their life force to destroy. One night the lounge furniture is tossed about the room like kindling while the students sleep. this seems to dissipate the entity and they start to breathe easier again. Only when other spooky occurrences start to occur, does the motley group realize that they have released something much more dangerous than a mere ghost. The rhythm of this story and the reader''s interest in the characters made this book a real page turner right up until the enigmatic ending. One of the best ghost stories I have read in a long time.
